These videos explain what the 17 SDGs are, the 169 targets associated with them and the monitoring indicators identified to track trends. They focus on the interactions between the SDGs, which can lead to synergies or antagonisms, and which must be considered in all action programs. Numerous examples are provided to illustrate this.

Jean-Paul Moatti, Chairman and CEO of the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), provides some background information on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. He highlights the need to take into account the interactions between these SDGs.

The SDGsʼ geographic universality: an agenda for all nations

Hubert de Milly, an expert at the French Development Agency (AFD), highlights the universality of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). First of all, he highlights the need for all countries in the world to become more sustainable. He then goes one to analyse the special responsibility of northern countries for the achievement, by all, of the SDGs, before raising the issue of Official Development Assistance.

SDG sectorial universality : all fields are covered

Sarah Marniesse, Director of the Department of Research and Innovation Mobilisation at IRD until June 2018, and now Head of AFD's Development Campus, outlines the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the context of building the sustainable development agenda and how it differs from the MDG (Millennium Development Goals) agenda. She also explains what the targets and monitoring indicators associated with these SDGs are. Finally, she discusses the feasibility of implementing this agenda.

Understanding interactions between SDGs

Anne-Sophie Stevance, Scientific Officer at the International Council for Science (ISC), shows how the SDGs are consistent with each other. To this end, she describes the different levels of influence that can be observed and then discusses the involvement of this work on the issues of priority action and ownership of the SDGs.

Interactions between SDGs: the example of SDG 12 on responsible production and consumption

Yacine Badiane Ndour, Senior Researcher at the Institut Sénégalais de Recherches Agricoles (ISRA), explains the interactions between Sustainable Development Goal 12, on sustainable consumption and production, and the other SDGs. She focuses in particular on the issue of combating food waste, soil management (the 4 per 1000 initiative) and the recovery of food waste.

Interactions between SDGs: an illustration with Neglected Tropical Diseases

Philippe Solano, Research Director at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), and Director of the "Intertryp" Research Unit (IRD/Cirad), shows the relationship between Sustainable Development Goal 3 "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages" and the other SDGs. He illustrates his point with the question of Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Factoring in interactions between SDGs: a success factor for agriculture

Jean-Luc Chotte, Research Director at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), talks to us about agriculture and Sustainable Development Goal 2 "Zero Hunger". He stressed the importance of considering the interactions between the targets of this SDG and those of the other SDGs, as part of a Nexus approach.

Public policy related choices to attain SDGs

Françoise Rivière, Deputy Director of the Strategy Department at the French Development Agency (AFD), presents the various instruments available to governments to conduct their public policies. She highlights the keys to success in trying to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, in all their diversity and despite their contradictions.

Indicators for monitoring Sustainable Development Goals

Frédéric Vey and Anne-Sophie Hesse, from the French Ministry of Ecological Transition, talk about the indicators for monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). After a theoretical approach to define and point out the limits of the indicators, they show how SDGs indicators are applied from the international to the national level.
